Nigeria Work Visa Process
Foreign nationals intending to work in Nigeria must obtain the appropriate immigration authorisation based on the nature and duration of their assignment. Broadly, the available routes can be divided into short-term work authorisation and long-term employment and residence.
Nigeria offers two (2) types of permits depending on the purpose of a foreign national’s stay and intended activities in the country.
- Temporary Work Permit (R11)
- Long Term Work Permit (E-CERPAC)
Types of Visas and Permits
R11 TEMPORARY WORK PERMIT
An R11 Temporary Work Permit (TWP) is intended for foreign nationals travelling to Nigeria to undertake short-term, specialised or technical work for a Nigerian company or organisation.Â
The TWP is suitable for experts undertaking activities such as equipment installation, commissioning, maintenance and repairs, technical projects, training and capacity building, and specialised audits or inspections. It is intended for temporary assignments rather than ongoing employment in Nigeria.Â
The current R11 Temporary Work Permit Visa may be issued for a period of up to 90 days.Â
LONG-TERM EMPLOYMENT (E-CERPAC)
The Electronic Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permit and Automated Card (e-CERPAC) provides eligible foreign nationals with the legal authorisation to reside and work in Nigeria.Â
For expatriate employees of Nigerian companies, the R2A Employment Expatriate category applies to foreign nationals taking up employment against an approved Expatriate Quota position. The application is supported by the employer and requires evidence of the employment relationship, qualifications and the applicable Expatriate Quota approval.Â
Once issued, the e-CERPAC serves as the foreign national’s residence and employment authorisation and identification document in Nigeria.Â

Expatriate Quota: An Expatriate Quota is an approval granted to a Nigerian company permitting it to employ foreign nationals in specified positions where expatriate expertise is required.Â
The Expatriate Quota is held by the employing company rather than the individual employee and identifies the positions that may be occupied by foreign nationals. Companies are expected to justify the need for expatriate expertise, with an emphasis on skills transfer and the development of Nigerian employees.Â
An approved Expatriate Quota position is required before a foreign national can obtain long-term employment and residence authorisation based on employment with a Nigerian company.
