WHAT VISA CATEGORY CAN I APPLY FOR?

The Critical Skills Visa is available to individuals who possess the required skills, qualifications, and experience listed on the South Africa’s Critical Skills List and by also meeting the criteria introduced by Immigration Act  Point –  Based – System which is now being used to evaluate whether applicants qualify for Critical Skills Visa and General Work VisaThis visa is ideal for professionals who meet these criteria and want to live and work in South Africa.

If you have a valid job offer from a South African employer, the Critical Skills Visa can be issued for up to five (5) years and is renewable upon expiry.

For applicants without a job offer but who still wish to seek employment in South Africa, a one (1) year non-renewable Critical Skills Visa may be granted to allow time to find suitable work.

Despite its straightforward name, the General Work Visa is one of the most complex and demanding work visa categories in South Africa.  The DoL certificate is no longer required in order to apply for a general work visa. As aforementioned a Point – Based – System is used to evaluate whether an applicant qualifies for a general work visa. This is done by analyzing the applicant’s qualification(s), work experience, salary, offer of employment, ability to speak at least one official language and whether the offer comes from a trusted employer. The overall evaluation goal is to ensure an applicant meets a 100 points in order to qualify for the visa.

The application process for the General Work Visa is multi-layered and time-consuming, requiring careful attention to detail to meet all regulatory criteria.

If you are married to a South African citizen or permanent resident and wish to live with them in South Africa, you may be eligible to apply for a Spousal Visa. This visa permits residence but restricts study, work and business activities unless you apply separately with a valid study acceptance letter, contract of employment or business registration documents from a South African company.

This visa category also extends to life partners who can demonstrate that their relationship has been ongoing for at least two (2) years.

The Student Visa is designed for international students accepted to study at accredited South African educational institutions. This visa allows you to reside in South Africa for the duration of your studies, alternatively 3 years for school and 2 years for other institutions

Additionally, student visa holders are permitted to work part-time on an ad-hoc basis for up to 20 hours per week, providing flexibility to support your living expenses while studying.

Nationals who are not exempt from visas must apply for a Short-Term Visa to visit South Africa for business or holiday purposes. This visa is initially issued for a duration of three (3) months and can be extended for an additional three (3) months while in South Africa if needed.

Please note, work or business activities are strictly prohibited on this visa category.

If you need to work on an urgent project in South Africa within a short timeframe of 3 to 6 months, the Short-Term Work Visa is the ideal option. This visa allows you to legally perform work activities in South Africa without risking legal complications for yourself or the employing South African company.

Designed for temporary assignments, the Short-Term Work Visa ensures compliance with immigration laws while meeting your business needs efficiently.

The Immigration Act includes several provisions that allow foreign nationals to apply for Permanent Residency in South Africa. Whether through work, family ties, or other qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to settle permanently in the country.
