The Kingdom of Eswatini or Swaziland is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, and south. Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa; despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous highveld to a hot and dry. Eswatini is a developing country with a small economy.
It is classified as a country with a lower-middle-income. As a member of the Southern African Customs Union and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, its main local trading partner is South Africa; in order to ensure economic stability, Eswatini’s currency, the lilangeni, is pegged to the South African rand. Eswatini’s major overseas trading partners are the United States and the European Union. The majority of the country’s employment is provided by its agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
Entry-visas are issued to foreign nationals who would like to sojourn in Swaziland for tourism or business purposes, to visit family and friends or to receive medical treatment. This visa is granted for a period not exceeding 90 days which varies depending on nationality.
A Temporary Residence permit is issued to a foreign worker that wishes to take employment in Swaziland for up to 2 years. The validity period of this permit is subject to the discretion of the Director of the Department of Immigration Services. Work permits are renewable provided the employee’s local contract of employment is valid and ongoing.
A dependent permit is issued to a spouse, parent or guardian of a foreign national who is lawfully allowed to enter for work purposes or other purposes. The validity of the dependent permit is granted at the discretion of the immigration officer and is often tied to the validity of the main applicant’s permit.
A student or internship permit is issued to foreign nationals who wish to pursue their education in Swaziland’s education or training institutions, or those who wish to undertake an internship or take part in academic research in an accredited institution in Swaziland. The validity of the student or internship permit is depending on the duration of studies, the duration of the internship, or research assignment.
